Alex Wilson soxprospects.com/players/wilson-alex.htmAge: 23 Born: November 3, 1986 Hurricane, WV Height: 6-1 Weight: 205 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 2nd round, 2009 MLB Comparison: Andrew Bailey Scouting Report: Big righty missed 2008 season due to Tommy John Surgery. 3/4 arm slot. Clean mechanics, but his delivery is somewhat arduous. Fastball sits around 92-93 mph, but he's previously worked around 96-97 mph. He should be able to get back to the mid-90s in the near future, especially if he ends up in a bullpen role. Fastball has average life. Plus 81-84 mph slider misses a lot of bats. He uses his slider as his out pitch. Also mixes in an 85-86 mph changeup that is a work in progress, as it presently doesn't have enough separation from his fastball. Curveball, which sits around 76-77 mph, is also in development. Overall, Wilson has very good control and command, but will need to consistently keep his slider over the plate if pro hitters are going to continually bite on it. Excellent strikeout numbers

Derrik Gibson soxprospects.com/players/gibson-derrik.htmAge: 20 Born: December 5, 1989 Seaford, DE Height: 6-1 Weight: 170 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 2nd round, 2008 Comparison: Ryan Theriot Scouting Report: Lightning-fast shortstop, probably can add some bulk and maintain top-line speed. Good defensive player, he should eventually excel at both shortstop and second base with some seasoning. Great range and footwork. Accurate arm with average strength. Throwing mechanics are somewhat herky-jerky, but still makes strong, quick throws. Also could improve ball transfers on double plays. All in all, the game seems to come easy to Gibson - he has a nice fluidity in the field and a quick-twitch response in all aspects of the game. With the bat, his stance is a little compact. He has quick wrists and a short, smooth stroke. He connects with the ball and has gap power. Likely doesn't have the frame to add a lot of home run power. Patient approach. Gritty, fundamental player. Mixes speed with impressive intelligence on the basepaths.

Mark Wagner soxprospects.com/players/wagner-mark.htmAge: 25 Born: June 11, 1984 Long Beach, CA Height: 6-1 Weight: 205 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 9th round, 2005; MLB Comparison: Brad Ausmus Scouting Report: Good defensive catcher with a sturdy frame. Excellent at throwing runners out. Average at blocking balls in the dirt and catching mistake pitches off the plate. Calls a good game, but needs to improve framing pitches. Nimble behind the plate, looks very good fielding bunts. Has the potential to be an excellent defensive catcher at the major league level. He is said to be an extremely hard worker with strong leadership ability. With the bat, Wagner has gap power and makes decent-but-inconsistent contact. Very good plate discipline.

Kyle Weiland soxprospects.com/players/weiland-kyle.htmAge: 23 Born: September 12, 1986 Albuquerque, NM Height: 6-4 Weight: 195 Bats: Left Throws: Right Drafted: 3rd round, 2008 MLB Comparison: Nick Blackburn Scouting Report: 90-94 mph fastball complemented by a nice low-80s slider and a decent 79-83 mph change. Fastball has great late downward life. Attacks the zone with good command of his fastball - doesn't make a lot of mistakes with it. However, the control of his secondary pitches needs some improvement, with a focus toward keeping them down in the zone. His changeup could also use some refinement overall. Delivery is somewhat unconventional - a little long on the back end, but his motion is smooth coming to the plate. He's shown success early on, so the organization may let him continue with his current delivery.

Jason place soxprospects.com/players/place-jason.htmAge: 21 Born: May 8, 1988 Piedmont, SC Height: 6-3 Weight: 200 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 1st round, 2006 MLB Comparison: Jeff Francoeur Scouting Report: Outfielder with five-tool potential. Plays the game at full tilt. Raw power potential and above average speed. Historically strikes out a ton and struggles a lot with off-speed pitches. He has shown recent improvement in that area, but his power numbers have struggled in that period. Very good defensive outfielder - strong arm with excellent range, gets a good jump on balls hit out to center. Place made a lot of adjustments to the Red Sox hitting philosophies in his first few years in the organization, particularly putting a lot of work towards improving his swing. His development is coming along slowly but surely, and his swing is looking better as time goes on, but it still lacks fluidity

Stephen Fife soxprospects.com/players/fife-stephen.htmAge: 23 Born: October 4, 1986 Boise, ID Height: 6-3 Weight: 215 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 3rd round, 2008 MLB Comparison: Pat Hentgen Scouting Report: Great pitcher's frame. At Utah, Fife worked middle relief in 2007 and earned a rotation spot for 2008. Four-seam fastball gets up to 95 mph, but generally sits between 90-93 mph. Two-seamer sits around 90 mph and has a really nice sink. He uses his two-seamer more than the four-seamer. Great movement on his two-seamer, tailing down and in on righties. Also works in a biting 76-79 mph curveball and an 81-84 mph changeup. Relies mostly on his fastball, but has gone to his curveball as his out pitch on occasion. Working on improving the command of his curve, but has outstanding control overall. Really pounds the strike zone. Fife also has a slider in his arsenal that has been put on the shelf while he works on his curveball. Extreme groundball pitcher. Fares better against righties. Workhorse, went deep into games in college, maintaining velocity well. Ultimately, Fife has a high potential to become a major league pitcher, and whether or not he's able to become a starter in the bigs depends on how well he hones his secondary stuff.

Ryan lavarnway soxprospects.com/players/lavarnway-ryan.htmAge: 22 Born: August 7, 1987 Woodland Hills, CA Height: 6-4 Weight: 225 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 6th round, 2008 Scouting Report: Intelligent catcher with plus power. Makes great contact, outstanding plate discipline. Slightly closed, crouched stance. Attacks mistake pitches. Squares up on the ball very well, plus power to all fields. Catching skills are a bit undeveloped, but he has a soft glove with a decent arm. His release is slow and he's been inconsistent with blocking balls in the dirt. Sturdy frame. That being said, he hasn't worn out his knees too much as he's only been a full time catcher since 2007. Team leader. Led NCAA in batting average in 2007

Will Middlebrooks soxprospects.com/players/middlebrooks-will.htmAge: 21 Born: September 9, 1988 Texarkana, TX Height: 6-4 Weight: 200 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 5th round, 2007 Scouting Report: Excellent five-tool athlete, probably the best overall talent selected by the Red Sox in the 2007 draft. Great baseball frame with very quick wrists. Open stance, holds his hands high above his head. Needs a lot of work on pitch recognition. Struggles with inside pitches, and has shown extended periods where he struggles to make contact. His tendency to over-pull the ball is steadily improving. High power potential, not so much present power. Above-average speed for a third baseman. In the field, he has pretty good hands, a rocket arm, and his range might be slightly above average at third.

Gaby Hernandez soxprospects.com/players/hernandez-gaby.htmAge: 23 Born: May 2, 1986 Miami, FL Height: 6-3 Weight: 215 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 3rd round, 2004 by NYM Scouting Report: Hernandez has played at age-advanced levels throughout his career, and his tools have been highly regarded in many scouting circles along the way. Fastball sits in the low-90s and tops out at 94 mph. Excellent-but-inconsistent curveball. Average-to-above-average changeup with decent movement. Good control. Able to go deep into games. Has had confidence issues in recent years, and tends to get rattled easily. Lacks aggressiveness, nibbles on the corners too much.

Roman Mendez soxprospects.com/players/mendez-roman.htmAge: 19 Born: July 25, 1990 San Pedro de Macoris, DR Height: 6-2 Weight: 195 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: Not drafted How Acquired: International free agent (July 2007) ETA: 2014 Scouting Report: Young Dominican righty signed during initial international signing period in 2007. Has a lot of room to fill out his frame. His fastball has nice late movement, sits between 90-93 mph, and has topped out at 96 mph. Also has an above average 77-81 mph slider and a developing low-80s changeup that needs work. Good command. Mature and poised on the mound. Fluid delivery, but can short-arm the ball on occasion.

Pete Hissey soxprospects.com/players/hissey-pete.htmAge: 20 Born: January 17, 1990 West Chester, PA Height: 6-1 Weight: 180 Bats: Left Throws: Left Drafted: 4th round, 2008 Scouting Report: Speedy center fielder with nice range and solid fundamentals. A great overall athlete. Advanced approach at the plate - a very selective hitter. Gets the bat on the ball at a good clip with his smooth, quick swing. Hissey will spray a lot of line drives for singles. Below average present power. A lot of room to fill out his frame. Projects to develop some power, but will likely be more of a singles and doubles hitter in his early pro years. Above average plate discipline. Above average speed. Gritty, smart, and competitive. Strong arm in the outfield

Michael Almanzar soxprospects.com/players/almanzar-michael.htmAge: 19 Born: December 2, 1990 Santo Domingo, DR Height: 6-3 Weight: 180 Bats: Right Throws: Right Scouting Report: Tall, lanky third baseman, extremely athletic but raw. Presently very thin, but has room to add muscle and strength. Signed at the age of 16 but hadn't played much organized ball prior, despite being the son of former MLB pitcher Carlos Almanzar. Has a ton of potential offensively, showed off present tools by dominating the GCL during a short stint in 2008. Struggled against more advanced pitching - especially against off-speed pitches - after skipping a level to Greenville later that season. Overall, approach is advanced in some places and raw in others. Fidgets in the batter's box, has an open stance that tightens up a lot after a big timing step. Generates a lot of bat speed and has plus plus power potential. Has some balance issues, but has a smooth swing with fluid movement. His speed on the basepaths is average-to-below-average. Also a work-in-progress on defense. Has improved with the glove, but still plays the field more on instinct than instruction.

Kendal Volz soxprospects.com/players/volz-kendal.htmAge: 22 Born: December 2, 1987 San Antonio, TX Height: 6-4 Weight: 225 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 9th Round Scouting Report: Volz possesses a 92-95 mph fastball, which he complements with a very nice low-80s slider and an inconsistent changeup. Highly regarded coming out of high school. Showed flashes of brilliance as Team USA's closer in the summer of 2008, but most scouts were disappointed with his subsequent performance in 2009, as well as his mechanics. His stuff wasn't all there during his junior campaign at Baylor, and he got knocked around on occasion. The Sox will look to tweak his mechanics to get him back to his previous form.

Madison Younginer soxprospects.com/players/younginer-madison.htmAge: 19 Born: November 3, 1990 Simpsonville, SC Height: 6-4 Weight: 195 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 7th round, 2009 MLB Comparison: Kerry Wood Scouting Report: Raw righty with tons of potential. Younginer has an impressive array of pitches, including: (1) a mid-90s four-seamer with great arm-side movement, which gets up to 97 mph; (2) a low-90s two-seamer with nice downward movement; (3) a 74-78 mph 12-6 curveball with sharp, late break; and (4) a newly-developed low-80s changeup with late life. Very raw. Mechanics might need to be tightened up. He will need to work on his command. He also needs to find a consistent release point. Competitive and focused, but reserved on the mound.

Ryan Dent soxprospects.com/players/dent-ryan.htmAge: 20 Born: March 15, 1989 Long Beach, CA Height: 6-0 Weight: 190 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 1st round, 2007 Scouting Report: Fantastic athlete - has quick wrists and top-notch speed. Built like a running back. Trying to develop a patient and disciplined approach, but progress is coming along very slowly. A little too aggressive at the plate, fails to work counts. Doesn't make great contact. When he gets on base, Dent is a superb base runner, getting nice jumps on the basepaths. Good strength for his size and speed. Likely better suited for second base, but also has the range to play center field if need be. In the field, Dent has an average-to-below-arm and excellent range. His glove and footwork, which were subpar upon entering the organization, have improved tremendously over the past couple years. His defense is now considered an asset, and he took home the Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
